Personal Development Curriculum
At Teddington School we provide a personal development curriculum to support the holistic development of students throughout their time at school, underpinned by the belief that an excellent education develops students not just academically, but socially and emotionally. This curriculum aims to support each student’s understanding of the factors that impact their health and happiness, both inside and outside of school.
Our Personal Development Curriculum includes:
- Relationships and Sex Education
- PSHE
- Careers
- Religious Studies (Year 10 & 11)
- Character Development
- Self-Awareness
- Social Responsibility
The bespoke character curriculum allows students to reflect on their own behaviour to ensure that they develop positive habits and act with integrity in the school and wider community. The curriculum is mapped against the four Teddington Pillars.
Personal Development Curriculum Implementation:
- The curriculum is planned to ensure that ideas are built upon throughout key stages
- The curriculum is mapped to meet statutory requirements
- The curriculum is delivered by tutor teams during registration
- The sessions last 30 minutes each day
- The curriculum is discussion based, with written activities to allow student reflection
- Staff delivering the curriculum receive regular training
- Assessment is undertaken during lessons, allowing staff to address misconceptions and at the end of each unit.
At Teddington School, we believe every student should grow into a well-rounded young person, ready to thrive in education and in life. Accepting
We celebrate diversity, respect differences, and include others.
Being accepted means embracing new ideas, cultures, and perspectives while treating everyone with kindness and fairness.
You'll see it when students:
- Show respect to peers, staff and the wider community
- Include others in group work, games, and discussions
- Listen to different viewpoints withought judgement
- Celebrate each others achievements
We develop it through:
- PSHE and tutor time discussions on respect, inclusion, and empathy
- Teamwork in lessons and extra-curricular activities
- Assemblies and guest speakers who share lived experiences
Curious
We ask questions, seek knowledge, and explore new ideas.
Curiosity drives students to understand the world around them, take ownership of their learning, and push beyond their comfort zones.
You'll see it when students:
- Ask thoughtful questions in lessons
- Show interest in different cultures, subjects, and experiences
- Engage with wider reading, enrichment, and clubs
- Reflect on feedback and look for ways to improve
We develop it through:
- Encouraging inquiry-based learning across subjects
- TEDdington Talks and external speakers
- Enrichment opportunities such as trips, workshops, and clubs
Determined
We persevere, stay resillient, and never give up
Determination means working hard, overcoming challenges, and striving for excellence in everything we do.
You'll see it when students:
- Keep trying even when work is difficult
- Approach setbacks as opportunities to learn
- Set ambitious goals and take steps to achieve them
- Support others in working towards shared success
We develop it through:
- Growth mindset lessons in PSHE and across the curriculum
- Celebrating resilience in assemblies and rewards
- Structured support through reports, mentoring, and interventions
Support Material:
Families can access sample lessons from our personal development platform, Wellio, using the below information. There are 3 example lessons so that families can get a feel of the lessons being delivered.
Removal of a child from Sex Education lessons:
In line with Department for Education (DfE) guidance, parents and carers have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all Sex Education lessons delivered as part of the school’s RSE programme. This right applies up until three terms before the child turns 16. At that point, if the pupil wishes to receive Sex Education, the school must arrange this.
There is no right to withdraw from lessons covering Relationships Education, Health Education, or any content that is required as part of the National Curriculum for Science.
If you would like to discuss withdrawing your child from Sex Education, or if you have any questions about our RSE curriculum, please contact the Headteacher.

Personal Development Curriculum Map
At Teddington School, our Wellio lessons form a key part of our Healthy Learners and Global Citizens strands, supporting all students across the school in developing the knowledge, skills and values needed to lead healthy, balanced and responsible lives.
Topics include wellbeing, relationships, diversity, inclusion, and sustainability, helping students to become confident, compassionate and informed members of society. Our RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) lessons are delivered separately from Wellio and take place during Personal Development time for Year 10 and Year 11 only, ensuring content is age-appropriate and relevant to their stage of development. Please note that topics within both Wellio and RSE may be adjusted throughout the year depending on the needs of each year group, or where we feel certain themes would be more impactful if introduced earlier.
