“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.” - Nelson Mandela

All students at Teddington School have the opportunity to study at least two foreign languages. We aim to enable learners to understand and use the language for communication, enjoyment and to enhance students' personal and social development.

All students study French and German in Year 7 and Year 8.  In Year 9, students then choose one language with the second language usually offered on an extra-curricular basis.  Students can also attend extra-curricular Spanish if they want to take it as an option at KS4. Students are offered the opportunity to take part in trips abroad; examples include the exchange trip in Year 9 to Konstanz in Germany and a trip to Paris in Year 8.

Teddington students often have a background in one of the languages we offer and where this is the case we assess their ability early on and consider early entry where appropriate. Some students may for example be able to speak pretty fluently but still need to learn how to write accurately, apply grammar and respond fully to fairly advanced topics in order to access the highest grades.
