Media and Film Studies

“The media don’t just offer us a window on the world. They don’t just present reality, they re-present it” - David Buckingham

The media is all around us. Not only does it entertain us, but it also shapes our own thoughts and opinions, often without us even realising it. As a result, there is a new kind of thing we need to learn; media literacy.

Our curriculum offers learners the opportunity develop a thorough and in-depth understanding of key issues, using a comprehensive theoretical framework to support critical exploration and reflection, analysis and debate related to the social, cultural, political and economic role of the media. Teddington students also explore the dynamic relationships between media products, media industries and audiences and have a go at applying this understanding through producing their own media products using photo and video editing software. Although the specification focuses predominantly on contemporary media, this is contextualised and enhanced through the exploration of significant products from different historical periods. Mediums studied include: television, film, music, video games, newspapers, radio, magazines, online and social media.

At Teddington School, our curriculum is driven by the belief that developing students’ media literacy makes them better placed to be successful in the modern world.
