Science

“Science and everyday life cannot, and should not, be separated.” - Rosalind Franklin

Teddington School’s science department is fully resourced with specialist science teachers for physics, chemistry and biology.

The science curriculum is based on the principles developed in the ‘Big Ideas of Science Education’ report – ideas related to students’ lives during and beyond school. These ‘big ideas’ cross all three science disciplines, from atoms to organisms to energy.  Our aim is that they are understood by students of all abilities and aspirations – not just those who go on to study science or take up science-based occupations beyond school.

Our curriculum is sequenced in a logical order to ensure students are constantly building on their prior knowledge as they progress from KS3 to KS4 and onto KS5.  As they revisit each idea, therefore, their depth of understanding grows and their ability to apply their thinking to unfamiliar contexts develops.  Our intention is to engage and enthuse students in this process as they test out their ideas practically, through investigating, observing and experimenting, thereby reflecting the enquiry process used by scientists.

In KS3 all students are taught in mixed ability classes and follow the topics outlined on the curriculum sequence document below, all of which include an element of practical work.  In KS4, there are two pathways available to students:

  1. Combined Science (Trilogy) - this is double award course which means it is equivalent to two GCSEs, OR,
  2. GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Physics - leading to three GCSEs (and requiring one option).

Our A level science qualifications – Physics, Chemistry and Biology - build on the concepts and skills developed at GCSE and focus on inspiring and relevant content that paves the way for the scientists of tomorrow.
